PREPARATION FOR GASTROSCOPY
PLEASE READ THESE INTRUCTIONS AT LEAST 7 DAYS PRIOR TO EXAM.
A gastroscopy is a detailed internal visual examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, using a long flexible scope. The exam will show problems such as hiatal hernia, esophagitis, reflux, gastritis, gastric ulcers and duodenal irritation or ulcer. The exam is usually not painful although your doctor normally administers conscious sedation to help reduce the gag reflex and choking sensation with the insertion of the tube. While the exam itself may last from 15 to 30 minutes, the length of time you will be here ranges from 1 to 1 ½ hours.
* DO NOT TAKE PLAVIX, ASPIRIN OR MEDICATION CONTAINING ASPIRIN FOR 7 DAYS PRIOR TO THE EXAM. DO NOT TAKE COUMADIN FOR 5 DAYS PRIOR TO THE EXAM. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING YOUR MEDICATIONS CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR OR NURSE.
HAVE NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM. THIS INCLUDES PILLS AND WATER.
* PLEASE BRING SOMEONE TO DRIVE YOU HOME.
You will receive conscious sedation during your gastroscopy. IT WILL NOT BE SAFE, OR LEGAL, FOR YOU TO DRIVE FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY. It is REQUIRED that you have someone to drive you home. It is also REQUIRED that your driver check in with you when you come for your procedure, and stay in our office while you are here for your procedure. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A DRIVER WITH YOU WHEN YOU COME FOR YOUR PROCEDURE, WE WILL CANCEL YOUR PROCEDURE.
